Curated by Riyas Komu, the Young Subcontinent project attempts to remediate the scattered political boundaries across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Maldives after the colonial encounter. The tyranny of maps have kept people guarded of each other, every contestation of official history is read as seditious dissent. Yet, the ancestral bonds embedded in the civilisational memory of these 1.6 billion people of diverse nationalities have not been completely ruffled.
Artists from the above countries have been selected and commissioned to create art exploring different mediums including paintings, sculptures, installations etc., exploring shared histories. These artists will be hosted in Goa for the duration of the festival where they will participate in discussions, workshops and interactions with intellectuals to build networks, knowledge and artistic capacities. Young Subcontinent nurtures and nourishes new expression in the hope to extend patronage to artists/cultural activists who have the potential to cogently represent the flux of their times.
POSTSCRIPT:
This blog is an attempt to continue dialogue and discussion that were raised through a curated exhibition, talks and discussions during the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, in 2016. 19 artists from five countries were selected to present their work at the festival, of which, 17 were able to attend it in Goa. Several artists faced issues of visa and permissions to travel to India. The project experimented formats and presentations allowing artists to express in traditional as well as new media. The following list notes the range of explorations by the young subcontinent artists:
